How AI Search Visibility (GEO and AEO) Differs From Traditional SEO

Traditional SEO tries to win visibility in search results. GEO and AEO add a new challenge: becoming part of the AI generated answer. Here is what genuinely changes, what remains the same and what businesses now need to measure.

Imagine your company ranks reasonably well on Google. Your service pages are indexed. Your blog attracts organic traffic. You have backlinks, Search Console data and years of SEO work behind you. Then a potential customer opens ChatGPT and asks which companies they should consider for the service you sell. Your competitor appears. You do not.

That does not necessarily mean your SEO has failed. It means the way people discover businesses is expanding beyond the traditional search result journey. For years, search visibility largely meant getting a page in front of somebody, earning the click and bringing that person onto your website. AI powered search introduces another possibility: the system can research, compare, summarise and construct the answer before the user visits any individual website.

That creates a new optimisation layer commonly called Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) or Answer Engine Optimization (AEO). The important point is that GEO and AEO do not simply replace SEO. They change where the competition happens, what the user sees, and what businesses need to measure.

How is AI Search Visibility different from traditional SEO?

Traditional SEO primarily improves how webpages are discovered and presented within search results so users can find and visit them. GEO and AEO expand that objective by improving the likelihood that a brand, claim or source becomes part of an AI generated answer through a mention, citation, recommendation or supporting reference. The foundations overlap significantly. Google explicitly says traditional SEO best practices remain relevant to its generative AI Search experiences because those features still rely on its core Search ranking and quality systems.

The major difference is not SEO versus GEO. It is ranking in the results versus participating in the answer.

The important takeaway is not that everything changed. It is that another layer has been added between the search and the website.

Difference 1: SEO competes for the result, GEO competes inside the answer

Traditional SEO has historically focused on earning prominent visibility within search results. A searcher types a short query, Google returns results, and your page competes to be one of the options the person chooses to open. The website then carries most of the burden of explaining the subject, comparing alternatives and converting the visitor.

AI search can reverse part of that sequence. Someone can describe fifteen salespeople, an existing Microsoft 365 stack and a need for automated follow up without a full time administrator, then ask for a shortlist. The system interprets the requirements, performs multiple searches, retrieves information, compares options, eliminates candidates, synthesises the findings and recommends a shortlist before the user visits any of those companies.

Microsoft describes this shift directly: as AI assistants increasingly do the browsing, visibility is no longer defined only by rankings and clicks, but also by how content contributes to answers, citations and reasoning. Traditional SEO asks whether your page ranks. AI Search Visibility also asks whether the answer includes you.

Difference 2: search begins with queries, AI search becomes a conversation

The keyword versus natural language distinction is directionally correct, but modern SEO is already far more sophisticated than literal keyword matching. Google uses systems including neural matching and RankBrain to understand concepts and relationships between words, and tells publishers they do not need to anticipate every exact variation a user may type.

So the real change is not keywords to language. It is closer to query to conversation. Five separate keyword targets can collapse into one prompt, and the buyer then refines it: remove anything above a price ceiling, narrow to the three with the best implementation support, choose one for a company in Singapore. The intent evolves inside the conversation.

Instead of asking only which keywords we should rank for, ask what decisions buyers are asking AI to help them make.

Difference 3: the old metric is position, the new layer is participation

Traditional SEO has mature metrics: keyword position, impressions, click through rate, organic visits, referring domains, conversions and revenue. AI visibility requires additional measurement. Microsoft introduced AI Performance in Bing Webmaster Tools, reporting total AI citations, average cited pages, page level citation activity, visibility trends and sampled grounding queries across supported Microsoft AI experiences. Google has begun rolling out dedicated generative AI performance reporting in Search Console for participating sites.

For years marketers primarily asked what position they held. A more useful question now is what role their information played in the answer. That role can be a citation, a mention, a recommendation or an evidence source. Those outcomes are not identical and should not be measured as though they are.

Difference 4: PageRank still matters, keyword density is not the comparison

Google does still use PageRank as part of its core ranking systems, alongside link analysis, semantic technologies such as neural matching, passage understanding, freshness systems and many other relevance and quality signals. Keyword density, however, is not a useful modern representation of SEO. Google actively warns against keyword stuffing and says its language systems can match content with searches even when exact terms do not appear repeatedly.

Equally, GEO does not have a verified universal formula of information density plus factuality plus consensus equals citation. Different AI systems use different models, search providers, retrieval systems and citation mechanisms. The stronger distinction is that traditional SEO decides which pages should be surfaced, while generative AI search must additionally decide which retrieved information should contribute to the synthesised answer.

That puts greater practical emphasis on passages containing clear facts, useful definitions, original evidence, comparisons, specifications, transparent methodology, decision criteria and current information. The foundational GEO research published at KDD 2024 found that interventions including citations, quotations and statistics could improve visibility within experimental generative engines, with results varying considerably across domains. That is evidence content characteristics can matter. It is not evidence of one universal GEO ranking algorithm.

Difference 5: the user may no longer need to click

Pew Research Center examined 68,879 Google searches from participating US adults and found users clicked a traditional search result on roughly 8 percent of visits containing an AI summary, compared with 15 percent when no AI summary appeared. Links inside the AI summary were clicked on only about 1 percent of those visits. That covers a particular US sample and period in 2025, so it should not be generalised into a universal click rate forecast, but it clearly illustrates the behavioural change.

For businesses, that means visibility can have value before the site visit. If an answer suggests three providers and you are one of them, the buyer has encountered your brand. If you are absent, another company entered the consideration set before your website was ever given a chance.

Difference 6: the consideration before click problem

This is where many SEO versus GEO discussions stop too early. They talk about citations, but a citation is not necessarily the commercial outcome. An answer can recommend three clinics and cite your website because your article explained the financing options well. From a GEO reporting perspective you earned a citation. From a commercial perspective you may still have lost.

  • Citation visibility: did the AI use our content?
  • Brand visibility: did the AI name us?
  • Consideration visibility: did the AI position us as a relevant option for the buyer?

For a publisher, citation visibility may be the primary objective. For a business selling a product or service, being considered is usually far more important.

Difference 7: pages are the SEO unit, entities matter for AI visibility

A webpage is central to SEO. It has a topic, title, content, internal links, backlinks, structured data and technical properties, and search engines determine where it belongs. AI generated answers add another level, because the business itself becomes an object of the answer. When a buyer asks which agencies specialise in AI driven outbound, the system has to reason about companies: what they do, who they serve, where they operate and what evidence supports those claims.

That means consistency across service pages, About pages, profiles, directories, reviews, PR coverage, expert contributions, case studies, social profiles and third party comparisons. Not because there is a magical entity score, but because the web needs enough coherent evidence for systems and people to understand what the business actually represents.

Difference 8: long form versus modular content is a false choice

Google says there is no minimum or maximum content length required for rankings, and that publishers do not need to artificially create every possible query variation for generative Search. So the conclusion should not become SEO equals long articles and GEO equals short chunks. Use the amount and structure of content the reader's decision requires: a complex topic may need 3,000 words, a pricing question may need three paragraphs and a table, a definition may need two sentences.

The real GEO and AEO opportunity is making important information self contained enough to be understood when retrieved on its own. A single clear passage answering whether GEO replaces SEO can stand alone while the article around it still contains 3,000 useful words. Structure and depth are not opposites.

What stays the same between SEO and GEO or AEO?

Perhaps the most important part of the comparison is what does not change. Google's generative AI guidance explicitly says its existing SEO best practices remain foundational.

  • Crawlability: systems need access to the information.
  • Indexability: to appear as a supporting link, a page generally needs to be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet.
  • Useful content: generic content does not become valuable because GEO was added to the brief.
  • Relevance: the information still has to answer the question.
  • Originality: unique, non commodity content matters more than reassembled summaries.
  • Authority and reputation: trusted links, external references, expertise and brand reputation remain useful.
  • Technical health: important pages that cannot be crawled, rendered or understood help nobody.
  • Good user experience: eventually the buyer visits, compares, books, calls or enquires.

GEO should not make the website worse for the human in an attempt to make it easier for a machine.

The better mental model: three layers of visibility

Rather than thinking SEO is replaced by GEO, we think in three layers.

Layer 1: Page Visibility

Can buyers discover your pages through search? Measured with impressions, rankings, clicks, organic traffic, CTR and conversions. This remains the traditional SEO domain.

Layer 2: Answer Visibility

Does your information participate when AI constructs an answer? Measured with citations, cited URLs, citation frequency, grounding queries and answer coverage.

Layer 3: Brand Consideration

When the buyer asks who, which provider or what option, does your brand enter the answer? Measured with brand mention rate, recommendation rate, shortlist inclusion, competitor share, AI share of voice and category query coverage. A company can have strong SEO with weak answer visibility, strong citation visibility with weak brand consideration, or weak traffic with strong AI recommendation presence. Those situations require different fixes.

The new search funnel

The traditional model looks like search, result, click, website, decision. AI mediated discovery looks more like question, AI research, synthesised answer, shortlist, follow up question, brand investigation, website, decision. The website is still important. It simply may enter the journey later, which means persuasion and category selection that used to happen on your pages can now happen before the visitor arrives.

What people often misunderstand about GEO vs SEO

SEO is dead

No. Google's own documentation argues the opposite. Its generative Search features use core Search systems and indexed web content. A technically poor website does not become competitive because the company started talking about GEO.

SEO is keywords, GEO is natural language

Too simplistic. Search engines have understood semantic relationships for years. The difference is that AI interfaces allow more complicated questions, more context and continued follow up.

Traditional SEO is about keyword density

Not modern SEO. Google warns against keyword stuffing and emphasises useful, people first content rather than repeating target phrases.

GEO means writing shorter content

No. It means making important information clear enough to understand and reuse. A long article can still contain excellent extractable answers.

If the AI cites us, we won

Not necessarily. If the system cites your research while recommending your competitors, you gained source visibility but may not have gained commercial consideration.

AI traffic is the only GEO metric that matters

No. A buyer can see your brand inside an answer without clicking, which is exactly why mentions, recommendation share and query coverage belong alongside referral traffic.

Much of this is already measurable with first party tools. Bing Webmaster Tools provides AI citation and grounding query data across supported Microsoft AI experiences. Google has begun providing generative AI visibility reporting to a subset of sites through Search Console. ChatGPT Search referrals can be identified through the utm_source=chatgpt.com parameter OpenAI adds to outbound referral URLs. What remains harder to measure directly is brand consideration across large sets of conversational buyer prompts, and that requires systematic testing.

Do you have an SEO problem or an AI visibility problem?

You do not rank and AI does not mention you

Likely priorities are technical SEO, commercial content, topical relevance, authority and entity clarity. The foundation may simply be weak.

You rank well but AI rarely mentions you

Investigate what AI systems are citing, whether your pages answer conversational decision questions, whether competitors have stronger evidence, whether third party sources favour them and whether important information is extractable. This is more likely a genuine GEO gap.

AI cites your site but recommends competitors

You may have strong information authority but weak commercial entity representation. Ask why your information is trusted while your company is not considered.

AI mentions you but rarely cites your website

The system may be learning about your brand primarily from third party sources. Investigate where those mentions originate and whether the representation is accurate.

How should businesses prioritise SEO versus GEO and AEO?

What to ask an SEO or GEO provider before hiring them

If somebody promises to get you ranked in ChatGPT, start asking questions.

  • How do you identify the AI questions my actual buyers ask?
  • How do you distinguish citations from brand recommendations?
  • Which AI systems do you test, and how often?
  • How do you determine why a competitor appears and we do not?
  • How do you separate technical, content, authority and entity issues?
  • How does the work integrate with our existing SEO?
  • Which claims about AI ranking are verified and which are hypotheses?
  • What commercial outcome are we ultimately optimising for?
A credible provider should be comfortable saying: we can measure and improve the evidence, but we cannot promise exactly what a black box AI system will say every time.

When GEO may not be your first priority

AI Search Visibility is not automatically the most urgent marketing problem. If your website barely explains your service, fix the website. If Google cannot index important pages, fix technical SEO. If your positioning is confusing, clarify it. If your business has almost no reputation or evidence online, develop that foundation first. If your customers do not meaningfully use AI for your category yet, other channels may produce faster revenue. GEO should follow customer behaviour and commercial opportunity, not industry hype.

SEO is not disappearing, the search journey is expanding

The most useful way to understand GEO and AEO is not old SEO versus new GEO. It is asking what additional decisions are now happening before the buyer reaches your website. Traditional SEO remains responsible for an enormous part of the foundation: making pages discoverable, relevant, credible, technically accessible and competitive.
